HHS Magazine 1960.

As scanning continues to be a bit of a 'mare', I've taken pics of the mag with a decent camera and which are at least readable!

Here is the 1960 mag in it's entirety!

One item to see, is that there is a picture of - I think - Asif Fancy in the foreground. His family are in touch here as we speak!

I seem to remember that at that particular tournament, he won against the Chess Master, who had just demolished the rest of us in record time!

Again, my apologies for the 'quality' of this post! The pages are easily readable here, but if you just click on them they'll enlarge to a finer reading value!

The Fancy Family...

A member of the family has been in touch for more info on his several brothers and cousins, who were at HHS from the fifties through to the early sixties!

The original inquiry is mentioned in the very first post of the blog, obviously near the end!

Here's some info I have managed to glean from the mags!

Looking through some of the HHS mags, I've found quite a lot of information about Messrs Fancy and the family members!

I'll try and write it all in chronological order, but forgive me if some events seem out of sync!

  1. In the 1957 mag, Fancy i (or Slade) were in the first football team.
  2. in the 1958 mag, A.A.Fancy left to go on to Canford at the end of the Summer term, after winning the Handwriting Competition. He also scored a 91 in 'The Gen Book Test', and the 'History Test'. A.M.Fancy left HHS in the Winter term. A.A.Fancy was also in the 1st eleven cricket team and won his colours, he was also runner-up in the 'Tree Fielding Award'. N.M.Fancy was also in the team, as was A.B.Fancy! N.M.Fancy was also in the soccer 1st eleven, and won the 'Geography Test' jointly with Thomson, scoring 91 pts, and he was also a Prefect in Spring Term, 1958.
  3. In the 1959 mag, Fancy V was in the first eleven cricket team. I.S Fancy went on to Whittlebury School at the end of the Summer term.
  4. In 1960, Mr A.H.Fancy made a contribution to the swimming bath fund! GB congratulated Asif Fancy on winning The Junior Chess competition at Canford! Fancy v is seen foreground in the photo, half-way down the blog post 'Prep School Life', Saturday 21st December, 2013. He'd just beaten the Chess Master, and I can still remember them both staring at the board, and a cheer going up! He is also in the picture '6th Form at work' a few pics further downI. A. Fancy left HHS at the end of the Winter Term, 1959. Asif Fancy went on to Canford in the same term.

I hope this all makes sense, I can only recall the elder and the youngest of the family, but you will probably be able to pick out who was who from this info!

If anything turns up from your end, I'd be delighted to post it as a separate item on the blog - we all like hearing more news! (note - I have done this here)!

Best wishes!

Mike.

Richard Cail's pics...

Richard Cail (HHS 1961-1966), has just been in touch, and here are his pics!

Comments on names etc., would be welcome from everyone, by clicking on the link at the bottom of the post!

In the swimming photo, on the far horizon between the master's head and the bush, would be my family home, at Broad Oak! On a clear day, I could just make the place out if the sun was shining! Commander Campbell, a Maths master at HHS around 1960, once lent me his naval telescope, and I had the perfect view of our back garden! My mum was a bit concerned at that...!

Edwin Morton R.I.P.

Edwin Morton

Sad news from friends here.

Here is a link to celebrate our chum, Edwin.

https://www.tributearchive.com/obituaries/12755342/Edwin-Morton

There was a Facebook reference, but this has been closed out for some reason!

The old HHS mags are a bit sketchy on many details, which is not really surprising I suppose, but a quick scan through the 1965 Edition, shows that Edwin was a member of the P.E Team, which made a display with 'Crichton, Docwra i, Dukes, Kell, Kyrke, Pender-Cudlipp, Ramsden, Scott, Tuite, Purser and Martin i...'!

Edwin was also in the 1964 Soccer team, - played 10, won 3, drawn 1, lost 7. The Team consisted of Morton, R.N.Seaward, S.T.Hickes, D.B.Kell, A.M.Scott, (Captain), R.H.J.V.Kyrke, Chrichton, Hickman i, Battersby, Dryborough-Smith and Martin i.

Edwin also gave the school a contribution to The Filter Fund, presumably because he, like most of us, rather liked the idea of swimming in water which was a bit clearer than of late..!

Edwin went on to Eastbourne College, where no doubt, there may well be other news from their Alumni Society!

In time-honoured fashion, our thoughts and condolences go out to his family and many friends.

HHS 1958 Magazine - at last...

At last!

Owing to a scanner with peculiar habits, I've resorted to an Ipad and Dropbox to get these pics into some sort of shape, so please forgive the amateur appearance! As I wade through the rest of  'em, I should be able to improve the quality!

Some OBs will remember a few names here; there was another magazine in 1957, but I've never seen a copy, so if anyone has such a valuable edition, I can post it here (as long as you scan it for me...)!

Reading some of the forgotten articles, there's a reference on page 24, to St Wilfrid's school in Hawkhurst! This old place is just a few yards down the road from our house, and became Lillesden School for girls, then Bedgebury Lower School. My wife taught there on two separate occasions! It's now apartments...

Much more is HERE... (just click on the link) and there's a whole lot more about the Maltby family!

Finally, it's interesting to see the logo dreamed up for the Hydneye Press, right at the end - - it looks remarkably like some bird on Twitter...

The Trainin saga...

Just recently, this HHS record has been noticed by yet another Alumnus, Peter Trainin!

Peter was at Hydneye for the years up to Christmas Term,1958, and is recorded as going on to Stowe in 1959. I remember him quite well, but was more a contemporary of John, his younger brother, and we often turned up in the same dorm! John is on the far right of the picture 'Challenging the chess master', which is in the 'Prep School Life' post in December 2013. Lovely guy!

Sadly, John died a year or so ago, but I do well recall him singing 'Tit Willow', from 'The Mikado', one year, probably in one of the furious music competitions we used to do! John was also a promising boxer, as a fly-weight, and is recorded with Emett ii, and Black ii 'hammering each other cheerfully round the gym in the friendliest spirit imaginable'! He was also a good cricketer; I think a spin bowler, but may be corrected there.

Another part of the magazine for 1959, shows that Peter won the Cricket prize of an Alan Oakman cricket bat, with J.A.Barnes, (I suppose they had one each, not just half a bat...), and was a Prefect in his last term. He was also a co-writer with K.A.Young and M.G.C.Graham, on an article about Circus Sylvester and Circus Maximus, the latter well beyond my capabilities

Many of Peter's recent comments appear on my post 'That poem', but there will be others lurking around no doubt! He tells his own story in his own Biopic and I'm trying to get it onto this site, but having a problem with the transfer!

Peter, if you're listening, just post here from now on and we'll all see it!
