Next reunion...

Another lunch in Sedlescombe, just North of Hastings, is planned for Wednesday 26th January, 2022.

So far we have a party of four, all HHS men from the late fifties/early sixties, but of course, anyone is welcome and I will bring the magazine collection from whatever year HHS inmates can remember!

Hello Mike. Have just stumbled upon this site. I'm Richard Willis, was at Hydneye 57 to 63 - I think I remember your name tho. I live in Worcester now but would dearly line to join you in Sedlescombe if I can . Where is venue and what time? My late father had the HHS mags from my time, he was an old boy himself I believe. Mags gone now and all I have is a red covered yearbook. So many names I recall. Glad I found site.

Hi Richard,

I'm so sorry to have missed your message - please accept my apologies!

Yes I well remember you as we were once in sick bay together probably with tonsilitis, unless it was when I fell out of Caxton's window!

All the mags are here now, so you're safe - I think your signature might be around as well!

Paddy Langdon, Tim Masterman and Roger Emett (1), are meeting at The Queens Head, Sedlescombe, just north of Hastings, on Wednesday 26th January around lunchtime! It's a great pub, with good food too! As long as the covids don't interfere, we should all be there this time!

I didn't know your dad was an OB! Ed Halsted has just been in touch so check out the next post for his CV!

Best wishes, and hope to see you one day!

Mike.

HI,
My name is Chris Vernon-Jarvis but when I was at Hydneye (1954 to 1958) I was Christopher Graves.
I was thinking as I opened the site that while I remembered a few events and activities I didn’t remember any of my fellow students. So much so that Hydneye was never even mentioned to other alumni with whom I attended St Edward’s Oxford!
Reading the news letter I found I did remember a few of the names. I have to say I was rather an anonymous student getting only two mentions, one for a report I wrote myself and the other for leaving!
My education at Hydneye was paid for largely by the RAF Benevolent Fund, I suspect the school was chosen because of E.G. Maltby’s connections.
My first year there was some doubt that the funding would continue. I was ushered into the headmasters study and sat in front of an 11 plus paper. Amazingly I scored well enough even though the paper was of a kind I had never seen before.
The year after I left Hydneye my mother married Alan Pegler who she met on a train to Cambridge. Coincidentally he went to Hydneye and was a contempory of David Maltby. He remained a close friend of E.G.M. and Aileen. You may care to add his name to the list of famous alumni. He is remembered for being the man who bought the flying Scotsman.
Some times it is major events we remember but other times casual words inform our whole lives. I had Mr Partridge for Maths and he provided an invaluable base for my secondary studies. It was also he who told us: “Men go to buy things, women go to shop.”

Thank you for the site,
Chris Vernon-Jarvis

Hi Chris,
Thank you so much for getting in touch, we're lucky in some respects, that there's only this place where we can all chat!

I joined HHS in the Christmas term 1958, so we would have been around at the same time for just one term! You may remember Paddy Langdon, who still lives near here, and we meet a couple of times a year with Tim Masterman! Paddy went to Teddies after you, and his brother went there after the Summer term, 1958! A.H.Orton went there a bit later, but E.C.Smart and R.M.Estcourt would have been there a year or so before you!

I was interested to read about the RAF connection, as my wife's dad was also in armaments at that time! The name Vernon Jarvis is of course, well-known from that period! I didn't know about Alan Pegler, and would like to post something here! Can I ask if you would like to do this, or shall I use what's on the 'net'! You can always email me direct on the address at the top of the HHS heading!

I hope we can keep in touch, anyway!

Kind regards,

Mike
